A shopping mall in Pune teeming with shoppers reflects the festive spirit of the holiday season. The buying binge and fun usually stretches from Christmas, the New Year till the end of January.

The origin of New Year’s celebrations can be traced back centuries. According to The World Book Encyclopedia of 1984, volume 14, page 237, “The Roman ruler Julius Caesar established January 1 as New Year’s Day in 46 B.C. The Romans dedicated this day to Janus, the god of gates, doors, and beginnings. The month of January was named after Janus, who had two faces-one looking forward and the other looking backward.”

If I talk about significance of New Year in Indian context, Indian calendar popularly known as ‘Panchanga’ refers to timings of sun rise, sunset, movement of the moon, and also gives the indicative, planning for each day according to variation of the nature. This is a time tested and established guidance sheet to lead a purposeful life. According to some Indian Philosopher this is the best time to be celebrated as New Year.

But whatever said and done, for me New Year’s Day is when singing, fireworks and lots of Masti and Dhamal happen with family and friends. It’s a day when we try to resolve conflict, leave anger, and many of us become more serious about life. We plan new courses of action to improve our lives.

The best Part about New Year is making resolutions. Well my resolution is to read News paper daily. For me New Year’s resolutions reveal that people want to live a better and meaningful life, they want to improve and thus humanistic and optimistic approach of OD can been seen. By improving our life we fell happy and once we are happy we generate/create happiness, it has a multiplier effect.

The object of a new year is not that we should have a new year. It is that we should have a new soul.
    – G. K. Chesterton

May this New Year bring all of you prosperity, love, happiness and success in your life.

    Happy New Year
    Jai Hind!!!
