The story below in a simple way illustrates Rumi’s wisdom and the magic of silence:
“There once was a farmer who discovered that he had lost his watch in the barn. It was no ordinary watch because it had sentimental value for him.
After searching high and low among the hay for a long while; he gave up and enlisted the help of a group of children playing outside the barn.
He promised them that the person who found it would be rewarded.
Hearing this, the children hurried inside the barn, went through and around the entire stack of hay but still could not find the watch. Just when the farmer was about to give up looking for his watch, a little boy went up to him and asked to be given another chance.
The farmer looked at him and thought, “Why not? After all, this kid looks sincere enough.”
So the farmer sent the little boy back in the barn. After a while the little boy came out with the watch in his hand! The farmer was both happy and surprised and so he asked the boy how he succeeded where the rest had failed.
The boy replied, “I did nothing but sit on the ground and listen. In the silence, I heard the ticking of the watch and just looked for it in that direction.”
The story proves that creative thoughts and problem solving solutions emerge only when the mind is calm and uncluttered. Even neuroscience has proven that silence nourishes the mind and body. Its a good to practice to sit in silence for at least 10 minutes once or twice a day. Soon the mind when faced with a situation will learn to auto-connect with our inner silence and think with clarity to find a solution.
Cheers and best wishes to all my friends! 🙂
A very good lesson indeed. 👏🏻

Indeed such a beautiful story and reinforces the power that voice of silence has on us and we are unfortunately ignorant or unaware it. This applies so much to our work place, in home and in our life; hence the need for meditation and reflection in nature can make such a huge difference. Nugget of wisdom has been embedded in the story…
Thanks for sharing such a lovely piece.

Hello Sir,
The story is quiet inspiring.
Silence speaks the international language of reflection. In many ways, it allows us to become more self-aware, to think about profound and trivial matters. Lawrence Durrell, a British author, said, “Does not everything depend on the interpretation of the silence around us?”
Some people consider silence an impediment, or awkward and uncomfortable. They complain that they can’t sit with silence without feeling a twinge of restlessness and a need to fill the stillness with words. Why do we suddenly feel this urge to engage in meaningless chitter chatter? Perhaps because we’re so used to the constant humdrum and buzzing activity so a silent moment is perceived as something out of the ordinary — possibly even unproductive and useless.
“Silence is the great teacher, and to learn its lessons you must pay attention to it. There is no substitute for the creative inspiration, knowledge, and stability that come from knowing how to contact your core of inner silence. The great Sufi poet Rumi wrote, ‘Only let the moving waters calm down, and the sun and moon will be reflected on the surface of your being’…” ~ Deepak Chopra
Afterall, . .without the silence between the notes, there would be no music. . .

To add to the comments, i wonder if someone has heard the ‘sound of silence’ , a kind of vibratory humn in the ears?

Great advise applicable to other situations. Silence is one thing … listening is another.

Yes Frank Rumi’s advice is always loaded with meaning leading to different interpretations. When we are in a Yes or No situation it is our inner voice which tells us what is right for us to do. So if we suspend the chatter in a mind we are able to ‘listen’ to the inner voice.
Cheers and thanks for stopping by.

Especially these days there is far too much static around, and it becomes increasingly difficult to find some silence where you can sit back and reflect.

Hi there Peter good to see you after long. Rumi’s words imply inner silence where the mind remains still despite the external noise. Conversely if we do not practice silence the meaningless chatter in our mind continues even in a quiet place.
I’d love to visit your blog after so long. 😀
