 The  Agri-Horticultural Society of Western India has been managing the Empress Garden Pune since 1880, with an aim to nurture and preserve flora of the region. The Society organizes annual flower shows and arranges various programs throughout the year to create environmental awareness among people. This year too the flower-show was held on 23 to 26 Jan 2015.

I’d love to share a few of the pictures which hopefully capture the enthusiasm of the flower-lovers and the beauty of flowers.

Grain Art

With different climates in different parts of the country India grows a variety of spices and condiments used in almost all traditional cooking. The grain art below has a number of spices and condiments creatively arranged. Some of the ones used below are: Cinnamon, Moong dal, udat dal, massor dal, tuar dal ginger, garlic, green-chilly,cloves, fenugreek, nutmeg, asafoetida, cardamom and star aniseed.

Enthusiast visitors and garden lovers not only enjoyed the beauty of flowers but purchased garden material too. Some typical rural food and snack preparations were laid out in the food stalls.

A rural delicacy called Hurda (roasted tender jowar) was also available. Hurda parties are organized at distant farms and villages in the month of December where the fresh grain (jowar) is roasted on coal in mud pits giving it a earthly taste but not many city folk are able to enjoy such rare outings.

    I adore poetry of Basho. My late Grandmother Julia Lou would read Basho aloud to me. This post of the flower show embodies peace and a tranquil rest. I am grateful to have seen this beauty you have shared as an artful exhibit.

      Oh how nice of you to appreciate and to know you love hurda too. The last when I had hurda was as a kid accompanying my dad in the rural areas of Maharashtra. So this was a good fun and lip-smacking too 🙂

    Thanks for the nice presentation, dilip… Even the most sublime sentiment of love would have remained a poor abstraction without colourful and sweet-scented flowers, that made it easy for the poet to exclaim, “oh my love is like a red, red rose / that is newly sprung in June…” best wishes… Raj.

    It is always hillarious feeling reading your thought on less serious living and showcasing the existence as it is. Watching your presentation of annual flower show bring us closer to reality and brings feelings of fun, joy and delight. If we look around whole existence is celebrating all the time.. The trees are not serious. Rivers and oceans are wild and every where there is joy and delight. I feel we should watch existence and become part of it.       I am so glad you liked the ‘grain art’ Cristy. For me too it was the first time. One had to look carefully to figure out all the grains and condiments in the decoration. 🙂
