I just had to share this beautiful quote on ‘Facing Life’ by Lena Horne with you my friends.

Often when we come across cheerful people we get the feeling that he or she has no problems. And we feel ‘oh how fortunate that person is’. But can there be any one who has no difficulties?   My friend Roshan shared an apt Punjabi saying “सूखी वो ही हय जिनु  पुचिया नही” which means only the person you don’t ask  is happy and without problems.

So problems and difficulties are bound to come sometime or the other in one’s life, but if you can have your own ways of handling them like an artist you surely can live a happy life. So lets be artists and learn the  “the Art of Living”! 🙂

How do you carry your load? 🙂

  1. What comes to mind after reading this quote is attitude, how we choose to react to our problems.

    Dear Sir,

It is not How one carries a load that matters, as that is going to be a transient ‘cure’, for the How is shaped by the WHY we carry it & this in turn is shaped by the WHO we ‘think’ we are!

Ramana Maharishi, had a great view on the ‘loads’ of life…whenever people would come to him and share their ‘troubles’, he would gently ask them a question. Whenever you travel by a bus or a train, where do you keep the load you carry with you on the journey? People would be amused by such a simple question and answer of course below the seat or above on the luggage carrier! He would smile-fully ask why not on YOUR OWN HEADS? and people would start wondering what is wrong with this man! anyone in his/her right mind would know that the bus/train is carrying the person & so also does it carry the load hence there is no need to carry the load on the head!

Ramana would then say, why are you CARRYING THIS LOAD OF WORRIES on your head? Do you have NO faith in the ‘transporter’ or in the vehicle??

Fundamental to our existence is this simple question – Who Am I? and the answer to this sets the tone for the Why we do anything and the Hows & the Whats….

The funniest bit is, people are selectively ‘faithful’ … when things are in ‘their control’ it is THEY who are ‘lifting the load’ & when things are BEYOND control, then the Load becomes TOO MUCH and they want someone ELSE to carry / else they BLAME the Creator for giving them TOO MUCH LOAD!!

Ramana, through this powerful allegory, is just telling us to be consistent throughout, just as we would be consistent in a bus or train journey. Then the How we carry sorts itself out verily!

The west is still waking up from beyond the How to the WHY whilst the East was always AWAKENED to the WHO. Perhaps it is time to ponder on the very basics (the unseen roots – who) rather than on the very visible flowers (how!)….

    Cheers!

Ramana Maharishi words on how to carry the problems of life is true wisdom. And to bring the advice into practice we need to do our bit but leave the rest to the Almighty.

Yes rather than cribbing it is best to accept your load and work on it with positivity and faith. Never worry about the outcomes.

Thanks Sri this was a wonderful allegory.

I like that Punjabi saying. It’s true, we rarely see what goes on under the surface of other people’s lives. Everyone has their problems, but some certainly bear them well and seem to be able to overcome obstacles that would derail most of us.

Sir, I agree with your thought. The problem is big as big we see it. If a person is always smiling does not mean he has no problem but it means he has learned to handle them.

  12. Dilip, Thanks a ton for sharing this empowering thought. It’s amazing how one can simplify what initially appears a complex & impossible, if not a very difficult task!
Lena’s illustration is a classic example of a person with a Positive Problem-solving Attitude that has triggered his creative mind, on facing a problem, & manifesting a reasonable solution.
At the end of the day, it’s your Belief that largely influences your actions & thereof, the Result!!

That’s lovely interpretation of the quote. Yes you’ve added more clarity in a simple way.

Problems of all sorts do come unwanted yet when a person handles them with a calm and positive mind become bearable and may even get resolved. In Hindi the term is “Dheeraj” 🙂

Carry the load whatever way you can. It is ” you” who will have to carry it. .
Others will watch, walk away & forget,

    Times change.
As my friend (who is that?)says,”This will also pass.”
No doubt, CHANGE is the only CONSTANT.

Completely agree. It is s easy to assume that other person’s life is perfect ans without any worries. We all face issues, how we handle those depends upon our state of mind and inner strength..it is a matter of perspective and making choices..you can choose to be happy or sad ..
