The literal meaning of these words is

“To change the situation (adverse),

  Is not in our hands,

But to change our thoughts arising out of the situation

 Is in our hands”.

Therefore it is not the situation however tough it may be that makes us unhappy and disturbed, but it is thinking about that situation that disturbs our mind. In fact if we do not react to the situation we can approach the problem with a cool mind and resolve it.

E.g. If an executive is sacked by the corporate HQ and it takes two days for the orders to reach him. For those two days even though the situation had occurred his mind continued to be at peace. But the moment he got the news he was in a state of misery and fear due to all the negative thoughts concerning his dismissal. Yet if he would accept the situation (as it had already occurred) with calm he could start searching for a new job quickly and efficiently.

It is said that “He who does not allow his thoughts to over power his mind, then no power on earth can ever disturb him”.

Namaste my friends!                                                                                                                                                              NAMASTE

  4. To agree with the said thought, will be stating the obvious. Let me paint a scenario. All
our life we are told to be fearless specially in adverse situations. To be assertive & take bold decisions & act in hopeless situations to turn the tide in our favor. Take the example of battle situation. A commander who accepts the onslaught by the enemy will soon be defeated. While a determined force & equally determined commander will change defeat into victory by simply challenging & reacting to the adverse situation . Many sacked executives have challenged & fought their jobs back with determination. Yes, we need to forgo peace temporarily. The ultimate victory does usher in peace; to the dogged commander as well as to the truthful executive.

Namaste Tina yes the ability of the mind to disconnect with adverse situations and continue to act in a positive mode is a great virtue. And that’s what I see in your educative water villagers post too.
      Kind regards!

Ah! Second post I’ve read today regarding the power of our thoughts! We all look for the magic in life, it’s funny because the magic which we are supposed to hold in our hands actually is just a matter of changing how we look / think of things!!
Something I struggle with too…but glad to say, more aware of 🙂

Dilip, thank you for sharing this simple yet, so meaningful a philosophy. It is your Belief, hence your Perception, when veiwing/experiencing a situation that makes you Respond or React; thereby, giving you the Result or Consequence of your Response/Reaction. Thus, it’s NOT the Situation causing the Consequence but entirely your Belief.
Hence, if you modify your belief, you would get the desired Result on facing a similar situation in the Future.
If we introspect, you would find, each of us holds a series of irrational beliefs despite being the Only Rational beings on Earth! Hence, we need to modify these errant beliefs into Rational ones; thereby, always getting the desired results in any situation.
Needless to say, ‘Prevention is Better the Cure’?!!

Hi Sunder what you say is true and logical too.
What I meant is slightly different. But am failing in my expression to bring out the exact meaning.

Simply put – we get disturbed when some kind of loss happens say property health etc. There are times when nothing much can be done about changing or improving the situation. But a person who has gained the ability to dissociate his thoughts from that occurrence will not get disturbed or anxious. His mind will remain free and help him to ‘let go’.

So therefore it is the ‘management of our thoughts’ which we need to practice.

      Many thanks and cheers 🙂

I am so glad you have similar views. Actually we just need to be aware and practice it. After all the situation has already occurred.
      Thanks Doris.

  16. “Change your thinking” or “It’s a matter of how you look at it” , mantras of 12 Step Program never seemed to convince me of anything. If the house burns down I don’t consider that a growth opportunity. On the other hand sometimes simple stubbornness in the face of adversity is an attribute and I think we can direct our thinking to activate that survival gene.
