Dear friends I am sure you will like this quote especially because it lends itself to different interpretations ๐Ÿ™‚

A person who walks......

My take on the above quote is as follows:

In the first part for reaching our destination or goals we need to put in effort and think rationally, logically and analytically. The goalsย  could be worldly, visible and tangible and to reach them we may need to strive hard. When we succeed we are delighted but if we do not succeed we may feel stressful and frustrated – basically a ‘ego play’.

On the other hand ‘walking with his faith’ implies a strong belief in the universal energy to reveal our true nature. And 0ur true nature is a state of being in Peace and Harmony which we are destined for.ย  When one walks with his faith there are no predetermined goals to achieve – and so the ego cannot exist. Here a person is more more intuitive, thoughtful and subjective. Peace and harmony just happen as they are a state of Being. What does the wise philosopher Lao Tsu say? – “all straining, all striving are not only vain but counterproductive. It means not to literally do nothing, but to discern and follow the natural forces – to follow and shape the flow of events and not to pit oneself against the natural order of things”.

“Faith is our trust in the Divine”!

Cheers ๐Ÿ™‚

  2. An interesting quote and commentary. Certainly when life throws down its challenges into us, even goading us into a fight of sorts, faith just strengthens you and propels us forward. You can overcome nearly anything with the right kind of faith.
Also thanks for your recents comments and wishing you a joyous new Year.

    Completely agree with this!
couldn’t have said it better. If you have the faith in yourself, you’d reach that corner of the world you thought was impossible to achieve.

That’s really true. As the saying goes, worrying never changes anything other than making us miserable. Better to have faith and wait for things to fall in place.

“Faith is our trust in the Divine”!
    What are Faith & Trust?
You trust your elders, guru, and friends because you have an experience of their relations, opinion, advice, help. You accept whatever they do / say. You know they will help in difficulty. In short, you bank on them. Generally you do not bother them for small difficulties.
Faith is a small word โ€“ If it is translated from โ€œSHRADDHAโ€ ; and does not include all the meaning โ€“โ€œshraddhaโ€ is difficult to explain but easily seen in people.
Shraddha includes trust, love, respect, belief. What else? One is ready to sacrifice for shraddha- ready to suffer the consequences, go through rough & tumble.
Yes, faith (shraddha) is very much our trust in Divine.
    Suhas

Earlier remark was only meant for my friend. How did it go to the blog?

Oh yes Suhas my friend Faith is almost similar to Shraddha. We commonly associate it with our deep belief in our Guru and so as you say it is sacred.

      Always enjoy reading your response.

I agree when we walk in faith, in our trust in the Divine, then we put aside our egos to follow Him. But when we put our faith in the things we do in order to gain something for ourselves, we find our egos hindering our walk and distracting us from our destination.

I think we all too often try to fight or conquer nature, to make it fit our ways, rather than trying to adapt to it or to simply appreciate nature for what it is.

  21. K Sriram says:

    Dear Sir,

A fundamental question that arises from the quote – Can we at all walk without FAITH? So can there be any walk without faith? – Then perhaps we can look at all the things that we succeeded in doing KNOWING we will succeed and those things where we were UNSURE about the outcome & still we went ahead and did them – It is a no brainer which of the two tasks we were more involved in, more excited about, more eager to do; etc. Predictability KILLS joy as it makes activities into chores!

So walking without faith is the walk that is predictable and the walk where we know the outcome & we are in control. Such walks are mundane, boring, dull and we have to literally PULL ourselves to engage in them… perhaps that is why we need to be COMPENSATED for such ‘walks’!!

Walking with faith is whenever we take the road less travelled, whenever we engage with the new, whenever we seek an adventure, whenever we attempt tasks where outcomes are unpredictable – there is an inherent or implicit ‘faith’ component in them – that is why we are able to engage in them in the first place. Else we would NOT attempt anything that we have never done before, if we did not have faith in something, a belief in perhaps oneself or the SELF. But the perks of walking with faith is that it is gives us joy, it keeps us engaged through its challenge & intrigue and perhaps we can surmise and say it keeps us ALIVE!

So perhaps what the quote is suggesting is that a life which is comprised of more of the former is mere existence – dull; boring & predictable and a life which had more of the latter is what we can CLAIM to have LIVED and therefore met our DESTINY – as destiny is but the ‘destination’ of a LIFE LIVED whereas FATE is the ‘destination’ of a life that just EXISTED!

Behavioral Economics tells us that we are creatures of our environment and make our choices mostly ‘reactively’ from the SYSTEM 1 – the automatic, reptilian, emotional center rather than ‘proactively’ from the SYSTEM 2 – the deliberative, cognitive, human brain. Getting to System 2 requires us to cultivate SELF CONTROL and there is evidence that Self Control allows us to LIVE rather than exist – the famous marshmallow test (you can watch this cute video – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QX_oy9614HQ). Now how does ONE exercise SELF CONTROL without FAITH? Self Control is all about delayed gratification. Can we delay gratification on our own without the element called FAITH? studies after studies have shown that Self Control is a great predictor of ‘success’ in life – in terms of people achieving what they set out to achieve (Destiny) and leading happier lives than peers who lacked self control. So the science of Self Control is proof that this quote is not a mere slogan, but a TRUE FACT.

So how does one BUILD FAITH? If you observe the kids in the video, you will notice that they were NOT saints who said we don’t get tempted; they acknowledge the presence of temptation, but put in EFFORT to beat it! Studies have shown that it is like a muscle, the more we exercise it, the better we get at it – so we can start by being inspired by the kids & the quote, start with faith, build self control and walk deliberately along unknown paths & roads less travelled to end at DESTINY…..

    Cheers !

    Sriram

Thanks Sri I thoroughly enjoyed reading your interpretation on the quote. The marshmallow test and your explanation fits beautifully. So the conclusion drawn is that we are the one’s in control – self control. I guess this assumption rests on the ‘left brain’ approach to do things.

Thanks buddy – I loved the video too.
