One reason why we unnecessarily load our mind with worry is a feeling of guilt on our past actions. “Oh why did I do what I did – and now I may have to suffer”. But if we look back at or lives most of the problems which we feared never did happen. Yet we lost our precious Peace of mind and health. And nothing is more precious in this world than our Peace of Mind.
So one way to maintain a calm and peaceful mind is to just ‘Let Go’ and not blame ourselves. Because what ever happened ‘had to happen’. So no point in blaming ourselves.
We need to just ‘Let Go’!

True, guilt is almost always the culprit Dilip!
Our yoga studio had a unique session to help us come to terms with these issues and let go. They held a havan, into which we had to drop little bits of paper in which we had written down the things that were plaguing us. That symbolic gesture of burning our anger or guilt, actually helped clear my mind of the baggage I had carried around for some time!! And I am not the least bit religious!

We fear our actions, then the repercussions and quite often lose our peace of mind. Absolutely true. Nothing can be done about them but accepting the fact that everything, even the smallest bit is the best that could have happened has been said so many times, still it is so difficult to live with this truth.. We keep getting worried and keep losing the goodness in life.

This is basically what Sri Ramana Maharishi & the Masters before him said – Whatever has to happen, will happen however ‘hard’ you try with your efforts to prevent it from happening; whatever has not to happen will not happen however hard you try with your efforts to make it happen, hence the best is to be ‘equipoised’ at all times.
The Serenity Prayer extends this further – Lord give me the courage to change that which i can; fortitude to accept that which i cannot & the wisdom to know the difference!
I am not sure of the source, but there is this oft quoted phrase which goes – the saddest words in life is to say ‘I should have….’ It is looking back with a sense of regret that which has ‘passed’….
It is not mere serendipity that this quote follows the previous one, for they are interconnected.
When does regret emerge? What is its source? and Why at all is there regret?
The fundamental characteristic of regret is it is only in ‘hindsight’ after some event has happened or not happened that there is any regret. There is no forward looking regret or regret in the present.
So regret is a hindsight, postmortem based phenomenon. Why then do we indulge in it? Why do we obsess with it?
The evolutionary reason for regret to exist is to make us better decision makers and to help us not repeat the mistakes of the past. However, we do not use this device for what it was meant as we do not with so many of the devices at our disposal! talk of ‘abuse’…
We engage with regret as a fantasy – what all could have happened, as though our dreaming about what could have been will correct the ‘mistakes’, wash away our ‘sins’ or make us ‘grab the next opportunity’ when it shows up…
Since our predisposition is to be unbalanced & overindulgent even about a protective mechanism, Our Masters came up with things like ‘This too shall pass’; and such above quotes etc. to keep reminding us that & making us see through the game of regret and making us aware that regret is like electricity a wonderful servant but a bad master. Use regret & we become better persons, by eliminating behaviors that led to regretful situations, but indulging regret & following regret often leads us astray & into depression.
So the path of not doing what we don’t want to leads us straight into a regret free life… a ‘witness’ approach or living in serenity too take us there!

Why did I do what I did??
Was it inadvertently done?
Did I do something I should not have done?
If you helped a person and later found that he was fake and did not need help, (may be) you will say, ” Why did I do it? Will it have an adverse effect on me?” But forget it; as it was done in good faith. You lost nothing.
Did I did it deliberately?
If you did something wrong deliberately; it will bother you off & on.
e.g. You did not help an old man cross the road though you had enough time.
But if you helped him even though you were in a hurry; you will feel happy for the right action. Memory of these incidents called “APOHANAM” can remain in the mind.
In the first case a feeling of guilt will remain in the mind. Too much of this can affect your health.
Try to forget. Things are destined to happen.

Letting go is really very important….. in fact, holding on to negative energy does nothing but attract more negativity and therefore negative events. Focusing on what you want, feeling good as much as possible, and taking inspired action definitely allow you to manifest and attract the life of your dreams……

There is no forgiveness for betrayal or for the commission of horrible acts in my thinking despite Christian upbringing so it is very hard for me. I have moved beyond thoughts of revenge or obsessing or thinking about such things so that is a great of kinda letting go comfort. That everything that was supposed to happen indeed did happen is little condolence and it is no sense contemplating the matter so there is acceptance at least on that point. Some things may never be resolved according to the wisdom of the post in my case but I have learned not to allow such matters to shackle me and have moved on and am somewhat free to remain doing so. I will not let those things rent space in my mind as best I can.

Dear Carl that is a well thought out response – on the ‘commission’ of horrible acts. But what appeals to be big-time is that you have ‘moved beyond thoughts of revenge’. And the words “I will not let those things rent space in my mind as best I can” is a great lesson for all in ‘letting go’.
What you have been able to do very few can – I admit I myself still have a long way to go. Your words serve as an inspiration to me in my quest.

Good thought. However the statement alone may be interpreted wrongly so as to believe that we should be lazy and let the things unfold on their own.
On this I would like to add that whatever was supposed to happen has happened; however the one who does the work gets credited. In order to get the credit, we must try hard, as if not us then someone else might get the credit for the work (from my understanding of Srimad Bhagawad Gita)
