“We laugh at the efforts of the musk deer to find the source of the scent which comes from itself and despair at our efforts to find the peace which is our essence” ~ Sri Ramkrishna Paramhansa

Wild Chital Deer

To attain Peace and Joy we need to connect with our inner selves not seek it elsewhere!

    Excellent quote no doubt.

We look for Peace / GOD in so many places.
We (read Aam Admi) look around for God & see the world; we get involved with the world which is not lasting. Memories of the past are difficult to shed ; anxieties for the future worry us WITHOUT WE KNOWING THE FUTURE.
The Lord said “Let your intellect decide and not the mind” because the mind drags the intellect just as a high wind drags a boat. (BG 2/67). Yet majority goes by the mind.
How do you hope to get PEACE??
Objects of pain & pleasure bother us or attract us. (Honour/Shame) [Success/ Failure ] etc
    .
    Easier said than done .

    “Khali pet bhajan na hove”

    Let us face the realities:-
How many are sure they will get the next meal? How many lose their source of survival by just a stroke of a pen? “Khali pet bhajan na hove”

Let me stop here .. the writeup will go on & on.
    Suhas

Dilip, as I read the Quote first response came into my mind was reconciliation and peace! ( before I read Sriram’s comment). It took decades for me to understand this, and even now, many a time, I go back to turmoil, and try to return to peace. Profound!

  23. K Sriram says:

Peace – the etymological source of the word suggests that it means ‘reconciliation’ ; ‘silence’ – which perhaps indicates that Peace is the ‘fruit’ or ‘end’ of a process. The Sanskrit Equivalent Shanti actually tells us something more – it is the indifference with which we deal with objects of pain & pleasure – that is shanti – So now it is no longer an END but the approach itself…

Thus the English Language seems to Flounder in its shortcomings of labeling!

The Musk Deer infact is RIGHT in being mistaken; atleast we can give it the ‘benefit of doubt’ – as fragrance is very likely to be from an external source than oneself! However, if peace is an approach – how can it ever be outside of oneself?

That is where the english word misleads – making it a sort of destination – but if we give a little thought to those words as well – reconciliation – who can bring about a reconciliation but oneself? reconciliation of what? – one’s expectations & results? between one’s desires & deserves? Getting to Silence – is to remove NOISE; remove AGITATION; – both indicative of the fact that NO ONE ELSE can get us ‘there’….

The Indifference to Pain & Pleasure is at the root of it… perhaps a fundamental shift in the approach to living is demanded … pain and pleasure as masters tell us is a result of labeling – based on the temporal ‘feel’ / ‘mood’ we are in at that instant… because what was ‘pain’ later turns to ‘pleasure’ and vice versa in all our experiences… Yet we do not get past this reacting to pain & pleasure …. thats why PEACE was made so PEACEFUL, to give us this INCENTIVE to go beyond…. but perhaps we get to glimpses & fall back as peace becomes pleasurable and not PEACE. perhaps we lack the persistence to see through; to go beyond and also perhaps we see that there are hardly a few who have gone beyond & majority is ‘similar to me’ we ‘reconcile’ and ‘accept’ the ‘incapability’ and therefore it becomes like the ‘darwinian’ ‘use & disuse’ of capacity leading to enhancement or reduction in the capability itself (in this case a sheer DROP in our capacity of persistence)

Behavioral Economists tell us that we are extremely ‘lazy’ – we want to conserve energies a lot & hence by default do not ‘think’ and resort to habits, instant reactions to behave in the normal course of life. This is most appropriate for a lifestyle where your life depended on a HIGH energy RUSH once or twice a day & rest of the day being dormant or automaton driven – like the Hunter Gathers that we were… even now we are but we are hunting & gathering fame / power / wealth rather than food & these things require a different ‘pattern’ of thinking very different from the one required for food!!

Getting to peace requires us to engage deeply with ourselves, reconciling our agitations; reducing our levels of ‘noise’ within, etc and it is a TOUGH habit to develop… But behavioral economists keep reminding us that just as we have got rid of most of our physical limitations by acknowledging them & then creating systems that make us work around them; so too can we get around our cognitive limitations of being ‘lazy’….

The fathers of Behavioral Economics – Kahneman & Tversky – have observed that our brain works leveraging 2 types of system – System 1 – the default FAST AUTOMATON & System 2 – the deliberate, SLOW CREATOR. We need both; we needed system 1 more when we were hunter gatherers & now we need to use system 2 more….

a small peek into their book Thinking Fast & Slow is in the link below – this is a book worth reading as it gives us loads of scientific insights into our limitations (of course the scriptures told us SO long long ago – but we need ‘hard evidence’ you see!!)

    http://lianagiorgi.wordpress.com/2012/09/02/our-lazy-brains-thinking-fast-and-slow-by-daniel-kahneman/

So to get to peace, we need to become more deliberate with our way to life; we need to become observant & perhaps start living like TIME – the witness – who is indifferent to the ‘pains’ & ‘pleasures’ who has an ‘object’ oriented – lotus leaf in water like view of life….

More Power to System 2!! (but it is a energy drainer – so keep all the Diwali Mithai’s & Dry Fruits Handy – so you don’t feel so drained whenever you live life as a witness till it becomes second nature & moves to System 1 – the energy con servant SELF!)

Wishes on the Festive Season & Let us give PEACE a chance, a window to enter & fill our lives eternally with JOY / ANANDA / BLISS…

    Cheers!

Sriram my friend your response goes in the very core of the term PEACE. You have bought out the essence of Peace in a very convincing way. From my side I am going to practice the following as faithfully as I can 🙂

“Getting to Silence – is to remove NOISE; remove AGITATION; – both indicative of the fact that NO ONE ELSE can get us ‘there”.

“Getting to peace requires us to engage deeply with ourselves, reconciling our agitations; reducing our levels of ‘noise’ within, etc and it is a TOUGH habit to develop…”.

Thanks my friend for this awesome response. Cheers 🙂
