We know that Time heals. We know that time is a great leveler. We also know we must pass our Time with full awareness but is Time also the best Teacher?

For you to interpret the importance of Time.

Have a nice day my friends 🙂

Time is definitely the best teacher coz it bestows us with experience…through the highs and lows, the success and pitfalls…time shows us that the longer it passes in our lives, the more we get to learn.
A harsh teacher definitely…..coz it doesn’t teach first, no extra-classes, no revisions and no solving of doubts.

  4. K Sriram says:

The word Time comes from a word that means ‘divide’. So as Rakesh has put it, its just the human way of ‘dividing’ up our ‘experiences’ into slices & slivers so we can ‘chronicle’ them. Something akin to creating ‘folders’ for easy search. Perhaps Time is the earliest search indexing algo.. and if it had not been created, Man would have found it difficult to share experiences & learn lessons….

However, does Time teach? it is like saying Google search can teach…

The Moment we get into these associations – Time is a Healer, Time is a Teacher, etc… then somewhere subconsciously, we become ‘passive’ and Assume that Time will take care and we can just be without ‘doing’ anything… That’s why the clear understanding of Time as this passive screen which is just a search indexation tool, is necessary.

We have been ingenious in giving time all kinds of attributes, ‘good’ time, ‘bad’ time, ‘time is not ripe’ and so on… This was done perhaps to help people overcome this NOTION or Illusion of control. By attributing to Time, Results of our efforts, we lose this illusion of control and therefore are able to say, i did my best, it was bad time, so results did not happen, so let me redouble and work harder.

However, somewhere, this ingenuity has been misappropriated to find the ‘good’ time to do things, as though if ‘time’ is ‘good’ whatever you do ‘results’ will follow… This is where the problem starts…

we have marriages in ‘good’ time, we have ‘shush muhurats’ and what not… but we have forgotten that the attribution to time was to account for inexplicable twists & turns rather than to ‘design’ success….without efforts…

So lets not fool ourselves. Not time is good, no time is bad – its what we do with time that makes it ‘good’ or ‘bad’… like one of those adages – there is no ‘good’ time to do ‘bad’….

If at all there is a Lesson in Time, it is to be like Time… (As the Lord says in the Bhagvad Gita – Kaalosmin – I Am Time) – a pure witness to all that happens around you / with you …Knowing well that all this is superficial ‘drama’ being projected on screens of time as ‘Life’ and to go about life as Time does… never stopping, never failing, never judging, ever ‘present’ & ever witnessing!!

    Cheers!!

Sriram your approach to Time is at a very high plane and complete. In fact the “As the Lord says in the Bhagvad Gita – Kaalosmin – I Am Time” is so profound that it dissolves all attempts to interprete.

Yes I too do not fall for notions and astrological advises like “good time”, “bad time” etc without meaning to disrespect the science in it.

One of our estemed readers below ‘johndwmacdonald’ asks quite meaningfully “Or is it simply the fact that a person has an opportunity to be in touch with the processes that can heal. The same perhaps applies to Time as a Teacher.. In fact does time really do anything except provide the opportunity or temporal space within which these and other things may occur?”

Your view that “The Moment we get into these associations – Time is a Healer, Time is a Teacher, etc… then somewhere subconsciously, we become ‘passive’ and Assume that Time will take care and we can just be without ‘doing’ anything…” is fine but there are teachers who tell us that when some major failures or other critical issues happen to the individual and there are no solutions apparent despite all efforts than it is best to leave it to Time which hear equals of the Almighty. And ease the mind with the wisdom of the “This too shall pass” philolsophy 🙂

Ok allow me to share a few inspiring quotes on the phenomenon of Time:

“I’m definitely going to take a course in time management … just as soon as I can work it into my schedule” — Louis Borne, (1945 ) American educator and business writer.

“Dost thou love life? Then do not squander time, for time is the stuff life is made of” – Ben Franklin

“Time is money” – Ben Franklin

Thanks Sri you are always amazing 🙂 Cheers.

        dear sir,

just to point out that i have mentioned “but we have forgotten that the attribution to time was to account for inexplicable twists & turns rather than to ‘design’ success….without efforts…” which accounts for what the Masters have said..

Now coming to the much bandied ‘time management’ courses – how does one manage something we are out of depths with in understanding?

If at all there is a ‘course’ it must be about demystifying the concept of Time, why did man create it in the first place, and what purpose does it serve… just as we are doing through these discussions… then we are onto something….

The emphasis of the Masters has always been to get beyond Time to become Timeless & therefore wag the tail called Time rather than it wagging us the Dog!!

        Cheers!

In the hands of time, rests the greatest powers that are oft attributed to God – those of healing.. unfortunately, Time does not get its due, and God gets undue praise for what Time does.

Maybe if we start worshiping time, every moment of our lives will become ‘defined for a purpose’ and ‘well-spent’. Thanks for a thought-provoking post,

Important questions and intriguing answers…but so often time is presented as if it were a consicious entity… which for me raises a further question – Is time necessarily a healer? Or is it simply the fact that a person has an opportunity to be in touch with the processes that can heal. The same perhaps applies to Time as a Teacher.. In fact does time really do anything except provide the opportunity or temporal space within which these and other things may occur?

Hello John I am delighted that you reblogged this post to allow a larger audience apply their minds on the concept of Time. A friend of mine also holds similar views – “Time is a coordinate and a non entity and it by itself cannot do much”.

I agree with you that Time allows us the “opportunity to be in touch with the processes that can heal”. Which means we do need to play our part too.

On the other hand there is this word ‘Patience’ which means when we allow time to pass on without reacting – at times times the problem itslf disappears. So does it mean that there is a Supreme Consciousness that makes good things happen?

Many thanks for making us think 🙂

      Cheers!

  19. Rakesh says:

Dear Sir and fellow readers of the blog,

At the outset I take this opportunity to wish you all a very Happy Dussera, albeit a tad belated!

While I agree with all of you, I do have a slightly different interpretation of time….

I have since childhood pondered over the concept of time, (and space). I wondered about what the first day in the universe was, and will the last be. Likewise where is the beginning and end of universe? It confused me a great deal (it still does).

I have since come to interpret time and space as points of human reference, mere metrics to help us communicate. I believe that there is no such thing as time. It’s like we are floating in eternity.

What we experience is consciousness (which is another abstract concept). Our life is nothing but a little slice of that eternity, just as space is little droplets of the cosmos.
So when I am told that time heals, I interpret it as “consciousness/thought” that heals. Healing is a mental process, not dependent on time.
This is why different people take different “time” to return to normal mental equilibrium. The difference is in the capacity of the individual to control his/her mind.

I’ll take a popular example. Since 1947, India and Pakistan have been at logger heads. The scars of partition and communal strife have not completely healed, because it is still in our consciousness. Despite great efforts by many to find peace, we are still not sure when the collective equilibrium can be achieved.

Now let’s imagine a scenario where a meteor is headed for the subcontinent in a couple of months. To save ourselves from catastrophe would we not sit together and look for a solution? It could even be a joint operation to use our nukes to intercept the meteor! It is likely that people might continue the cooperation after avoiding the catastrophe, which could bring an end to decades of animosity. What heals us here is consciousness/awareness.

(Kindly excuse the silly example 🙂 ) But I hope I was able to make my idea clear.

I hence believe that healing or teaching/learning is a mental process. Those who have control over the minds can easily break the loops of fear, ignorance, violence, arrogance…and every vice.

Of course that is easier said than done.

    Love and Peace!

    Rakesh
    🙂 🙂 🙂

I salute you chief on a stunning response. Your intepretation of time goes deep into the depth of the cosmos iself. At that point t is only unity some even say it is ‘shunya’. The concept of Shunya or Zero is a fascinating. All human beings engage in the act of creation from shunya.

You are right when we say ‘time heals’ we really mean “We create our life experiences through our way of thinking.”

Rakesh I thank you for your time and to share your thought.

the more time one passes on this world the more experienced he or she is… and that in essence is a reminder that we must respect the aged – for time has tested them longer and made them wiser.
