Thank you sir for sharing a powerful thought of hope which is the base of our life to move and tread in our way to excellence inspite of hurdles and problems of life. Hope and wait are the ingredients of success.

β€œThere is neither happiness nor misery in the world; there is only the comparison of one state with another, nothing more. He who has felt the deepest grief is best able to experience supreme happiness. We must of felt what it is to die, Morrel, that we may appreciate the enjoyments of life.
” Live, then, and be happy, beloved children of my heart, and never forget, that until the day God will deign to reveal the future to man, all human wisdom is contained in these two words, ‘Wait and Hope.”
    ― Alexandre Dumas

Thus Ends the final paragraph of the classic “Count of Monte Cristo”.

Hope is the expectant forward looking that helps humans to imagine a future that’s better and who better than the Count to tell us that its not hope alone that makes life liveable, one needs patience to wait for ‘hope’ to deliver.

But let’s examine the need for Hope…

When things are ‘hunky dory’ and are going as ‘expected’ we don’t seem to need ‘hope’. And the need for hope surfaces the moment things are not in line with our expectations. So hope is derived from gaps in expectations or when ‘negatives’ happen to us.

What is an expectation? What is a negative?

Both these words are highly subjective and linked to the individual. So Hope is a subjective requirement and therefore is not a ‘necessity’ as the Count would want us to believe. Anything subjective can be enhanced or diminished based on the subject’s perspective. The Subject can therefore decide Hope is useless or very useful or the quantum of its requirement.

Hope inherently comes with its twin – despair – when hope is not fructified! So it is not a reliable tool – of course patience helps, but doesn’t extinguish the hope-despair cycle.

The Gita’s wisdom helps – We must know that one important ingredient of ‘success’ of any action is daivam – loosely translatable as providence, people also call it syncronicity – the coming together of the elements to deliver success. Another pearl suggests that we must accept whatever result as prasada – or ‘gift’ and then ofcourse the most quoted – action for action’s sake.

Our Masters therefore steered clear of the requirement of hope and declared war on ‘tenses’ of time – strictly living in only one tense they knew – the present. if there is no future to fear or look forward to, there is no requirement of hope.

we too experience no requirement of hope when the present is as what we want it to be – the ‘hunky dory’ era!

Let’s remember Master Uguay’s – today is a gift – thats why its called ‘present’ – the prasad.

So the quote is ‘second’ best in the absence of the original ‘living in the present’ awareness.

    Cheers!

I like this quote by Rabindranath Tagore on faith, light, hope and future:

    Respected Sir,

This is a very nice saying by a English writer.

Hope is the companion of power, and mother of success; for who so hopes strongly has within him the gift of miracles.
    – Samuel Smiles

Hope is the only thing in this world gives us reason to live life. Hope is the power from which future get shaped.

Thank you for such beautiful saying. Missing u and ur classes Sir.

  6. Wait, I just noticed you grow culinary herbs in your spare time. Does that mean you like to cook? My husband is the chef in our house and he grows herbs as well. I lost my spot in the kitchen quite a few years ago, which is okay with me. I do a few breakfast items and such. Margie
